Primary Purpose:
Assist homeless coordinator with fulfilling Texas Education for Homeless Children and Youth (TEHCY) grant objectives, as well as clerical duties as needed, to ensure students who are homeless/unaccompanied youth are successful not only during the school year but in years to come.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma
Bachelor/Associate degree preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be able to effectively work with children/youth
Must have good assessment skills
Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, students and community agencies
Must have clerical skills and ability to provide written documentation in charts, report, etc.
Awareness and ability to access community and educational resources
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to make independent decisions
Experience:
Social service/clerical experience (2 years) preferred
Experience working with At-risk youth
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- To implement all objectives of TEHCY grant.
- To work in capacity of case manager (assessment, advocacy, referral, linkage and follow through)
- Refer school staff, parents and students to community resources.
- Coordinate and integrate school and community resources.
- Facilitate communication between school personnel and students, parents, and the community.
- To work with homeless service providers, consumers, educators to develop comprehensive plan of service with measurable goals and objectives.
Assessment
- Make home visits as needed to gather information relating to students.
- Identify and provide services to homeless students and families.
- Assist homeless coordinator with providing casework/social services to individual students.
Consultation
- Assist with training for all district staff and community regarding needs of students/families experiencing homelessness.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities.
- Assist campuses in providing students the tools toward school adjustment.
- Consult with parents regarding their children’s academic performance, attendance, and needs.
- Serve as liaison between home and school when follow-up is necessary with homeless/unaccompanied students.
- Consult with parents, teachers, administrators and other relevant individuals to assist students.
- Inform parents of their rights and responsibilities under Mc Kinney Vento federal and state law.
Student Management
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
- Assist students with applying for social services and college admission.
- Support campus goals of prevention to maintain a healthy and safe school environment.
Program Management
- Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
- Any and all duties as assigned. Duties are subject to change as supervisor deems necessary.
Communication
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.

Working Conditions:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Regular districtwide travel to student homes and multiple work locations as assigned. Physical activities include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling
